Oh wait. I don’t. (Full blown rant ahead)
South by Southwest is, if you are lucky enough to have avoided knowledge so far, an epic week long festival of music and movies and such that happens in Austin, TX every year. It pretty much takes over the entire city with its shenanigans.
SXSW for the cool kids I guess. And by cool kids I mean Hipsters. Trend junkie Hipsters,who pride themselves in being smug bastard know-it-all’s. You know that guy who always talks about some obscure band that doesn’t even have a wiki and acts like you’re some sort of social pariah for being ignorant of Band X’s greatness? He’s a hipster. If more than 5 people like Band X, then he will have to hate them. Its the hipster code.
Anyway, SXSW. I hear about this thing every fucking year, and I manage not to care. SXSW news has infected seemingly ALL of my RSS feeds and it pisses me off. What the hell is so awesome about this thing? Everywhere I look, everything I read is tagged with SXSW.
Its not ComicCon, its not E3. Those are gatherings with awesome news stories, and awesome people.
After scrolling the musical acts page I can see NO artists I’ve ever heard of. I’m not exactly super trendy on music, but nothing even recognizable. Im not saying these artists are bad, just that they’re nobodies and who gives a fuck? Though I have to give credit to “Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger!” for maybe the most awesome band name ever.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for abandoning mainstream, but enough is enough. This is not a major event! Stop infecting the internet with coverage of this thing!
While I tend to be out of the loop on the music side, movies are more my thing. Once again, there’s hardly anything I recognize in the movie screening list. Everything here is the artsy, award winning garbage that no one I actually know will ever go see.
If you think I’m an arrogant asshole who doesn’t understand what SXSW is, then please by all means enlighten and convince me in the comments.
