I’ve got to keep on chasin’ that dream, though I may never find it
I’m always just behind it. ~Boston
Over the weekend I read a great blog article from Jon Acuff from Stuff Christians Like. It was 2 articles really. The first was a poll to his readers asking what their “thing” is. By “thing” he means what their passion is. What is the one thing you would spend all your time and effort doing if you could?
A friend of mine wants to be an illustrator, but right now he’s a salesman. Another friend wants to be an actor but works in PR. A girl I know wants to be an abolitionist but is currently a school teacher. We are a generation of people working on other things while we wait for “the thing.”
How many of you are working on something else while you wait for the time to be right do pursue your dream?
In the follow up post Mr Acuff addresses why many of us never find time to do our “thing.”
Most people decide whether or not to pursue their thing every day. They sit down at the computer or the easel and have a discussion with themselves, “Should I do my thing today? Do I feel like it? Is there anything inside me right now that wants to? Is this the right moment? Are there other things I need to do?”
I cannot tell you how often I have this argument with myself. Daily at least. Am I too tired to write? Should I just go to bed and skip the blog tomorrow? Its all procrastination tactics and its pointless. Nothing is a bigger waste of time than wishing you were doing the thing you love.
Decide to do it.
I am a writer. Writers write. They don’t argue about whether to write. They don’t analyze if they will write today or not. They write.
Make a decision and stick with it. Find the time to pursue your passion. Don’t feel guilty about it, and don’t second guess it. Make room in your life to chase after your “thing.” Admittedly, not an easy choice in the face of bills, laundry, and a full time job you need to keep your life afloat, but an important one.
I have used several block quotes from Stuff Christians Like. Hopefully Jon Acuff, (who is the writer of these wonderful words) will be flattered and not peeved by this usage.
