An easy way to find new inspiration

“So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key”
~Already Gone by The Eagles

It’s pretty easy to get stuck in a routine.  Weeks blend together and you feel trapped in the necessity of earning the bi-weekly paycheck and the general upkeep of life.  This feeling of being stuck sneaks up on you.  You don’t really see it coming.  One day you might just realize that you just aren’t excited about anything right now.

A friend told me yesterday, with tears in her eyes, that she doesn’t feel like she has any dreams or goals right now.  By the end of our conversation I hope she realized that her current goal is to discover new dreams and aspirations.

I think it’s easy to forget that we always have the power to change.  While it is certainly outside reasonable thought for most of us, we actually  have the ability to run away and join the circus if we choose to.  The only person who can save you from boredom and mundane routine  is you.

Generate some new ideas.  Think up new things you’d like to do or learn.  There is a blog called Wise Bread that details an exorcise  that helps you brainstorm 100+ new things you’d like to try or learn in less time than it takes to watch a sitcom.

Basically, set a timer and grab a pen, or open Word and just start writing.  Anything that pops into your mind that you might like to do.  Write it down no matter how insane or far fetched.  Don’t self edit, don’t give things thought.  Just write whatever comes to your fingertips.  You have to get to 100!  Hurry!

Just keep writing until the timer goes off.

When you’re done you might have some bizarre items on your list (like # 48. Fight a bear) or a lot of unsurprising ones (#16 Take a nap), but you will find some that are things you’d really like to try.  Make a plan to do a few of these things soon.  Or try to do one new one every week.

What wild things ended up on your list?  Share in the comments below.
