Level up: Learn the skills your dreams require

We all have things in our lives we’d like to change.  Some things we have control of, and many things we don’t.  Being unable to control our circumstances doesn’t mean these things won’t change, it just means we have to be patient.

Being patient isn’t just waiting though.

The only thing you can really change, is you.

You can learn new skills, get healthy and active, and change your perspective.   Wishing things will happen won’t work, you have to take action.

In video games (mainly RPG’s) the characters start off weak, untrained and completely unprepared for the tasks ahead of them.   Slowly as the game progresses the player has the opportunity to make their character learn new skills and they gain experience.  If you try to skip ahead too quickly, you will find that the character you’re playing is unable to cope with the difficulty scale.

In life we can apply this same idea.  If you want to be a doctor.  You can’t just show up at a hospital one day and expect to be given the job.  You can’t sit around at home wishing you were a doctor.  No magical creature or wishing well is going to make it all happen.  You have to go to medical school.  You have to learn the skills required and prepare yourself for what you want.

If the zombie apocalypse comes, and you want to survive it, you had better learn some post-apocalyptic survival skills.

If there are things about yourself or your life that you want to change, you have to actively pursue them.

Personally, I have an epic list of things I want to improve.

  • I want to wear shorts and sleeveless shirts and not feel uncomfortable.  I want to not wear a sweater or a  “shrug” over my “someday wedding dress.”   As much as I might dislike it, this means I have to get off my ass and start exorcising.
  • I want to be happier.  I want to change my negative perspective.
  • I want to have more energy/motivation.
  • I want to pray more, and improve my relationship with God.  (Uh oh, look out I’m getting Jesus-y. Get prepared people.)
  • I want a career.  Not a lousy job in retail.
  • I want to cook more awesome foods.

This list goes on and on but these are some of the things I can work on to “level up”, and generally be happier in my life.

I recommend writing out a list and  keeping it somewhere you can see it, or if you’d prefer to keep it private write it in a journal and check in on your progress frequently.

What things do you need to learn before you can level up?

Awesome post… Really made me think… I wish your blog had a thumbs up button :)

Here is my short list: I want to read my bible more so I have wisdom to actually give people when they need it; I want to eat better and work out more; I want to be nicer to my students even when they are crazy; and I want to be more outgoing.

    :)
