This three day weekend has stolen my motivation

Weekends are a bit like rainbows; they look good from a distance but disappear when you get up close to them. ~John Shirley

My weekend has been a whirlwind of insanity.  It is for this reason that I regret to inform you that this is not a usual Monday morning update.

This is a cop out.

This is me, phoning in a Monday article.

The more I think about it, the more I start to realize that maybe having Monday be the first post of the week was a flawed plan.  Monday are terrible.  Does anyone really give 100% on Monday morning?

I have other excuses for my laze.  For example my schizoid boss is “re-configuring” everyone’s schedule.  I have no idea how I got Monday off this week, but I’m going to run with it.

Or I could blame Netflix for their outstanding instant streaming service that brings me constant, mindless entertainment.

But really, the fault is mine.  I shouldn’t try to pass the blame on this one.  I don’t have to work today, and therefore my eyes demand more closed time.  I see the picture up there of that awesome napping cat and I can’t help but want to go back to sleep.  A mid-morning nap, if you will.  Even the promise of coffee is not enough to keep my eyes open.

…and so I will return to slumber and hope that those of you who are back to the grind this morning have as pleasant a Monday as your circumstances and outlook allow.

Sending a grown up to the kid’s table

Most of us have had big family holidays with aunts, uncles, cousins, and relatives of all varieties. Usually at large gatherings like this the children get their own table. The kids usually love this since it means they don’t have to listen to boring grown up talk and they get to use less than polite table manners.
At the kid’s table all the utensils are dull, sometimes the cups have lids and are almost always made of plastic, and an adult cuts up any meat since the children aren’t allowed to have knives.  The kid’s table is protected from things that those seated around it, aren’t ready to handle.

Occasionally, you might need to send an adult back to the metaphorical “kid’s table.”

There are people that will be in your life because of circumstance.  In-Laws, Co-workers, roommates and family are ingrained in your life.  These are usually not people you can simply ignore, but occasionally some of them need to be isolated from certain things.  Things, they might not be able to handle for various reasons.  Without sounding like I’ve watched  too many crime shows, maybe they can’t be trusted with certain information.  Information that can be passed around as hurtful gossip, or used as emotional blackmail.   They are no longer mature enough to have your total trust.  Maybe they never were.

It’s hard to cut them out of your life, so try to filter them instead.  Minimize the damage by limiting the things you share with them.  Trust has to be earned, but also maintained.  It’s a difficult road to re-gain trust after it has been lost.  If, once kid’s tabled, they can mature and act like a trustworthy grown up again, then you can decide to let them come back to the big table.

For now, hand them a spork and a sippy cup and direct them to their new seat.  Sometimes its easier to filter the knowledge they have than to confront them.

*****This is in no way a healthy way to deal with a problematic relationship.  But again I’m not a doctor.  I’m a coward.

So until I find courage or until you are ready to act like a grown up….. I love you, but you’re kid’s tabled.

A simple decision to act

I’ve got to keep on chasin’ that dream, though I may never find it
I’m always just behind it.

Over the weekend I read a great blog article from Jon Acuff from Stuff Christians Like. It was 2 articles really.  The first was a poll to his readers asking what their “thing” is.  By “thing” he means what their passion is.  What is the one thing you would spend all your time and effort doing if you could?

A friend of mine wants to be an illustrator, but right now he’s a salesman. Another friend wants to be an actor but works in PR. A girl I know wants to be an abolitionist but is currently a school teacher. We are a generation of people working on other things while we wait for “the thing.”

How many of you are working on something else while you wait for the time to be right do pursue your dream?

In the follow up post Mr Acuff addresses why many of us never find time to do our “thing.”

Most people decide whether or not to pursue their thing every day. They sit down at the computer or the easel and have a discussion with themselves, “Should I do my thing today? Do I feel like it? Is there anything inside me right now that wants to? Is this the right moment? Are there other things I need to do?”

I cannot tell you how often I have this argument with myself.  Daily at least.  Am I too tired to write?  Should I just go to bed and skip the blog tomorrow?  Its all procrastination tactics and its pointless.  Nothing is a bigger waste of time than wishing you were doing the thing you love.

Decide to do it.

I am a writer. Writers write. They don’t argue about whether to write. They don’t analyze if they will write today or not. They write.

Make a decision and stick with it.  Find the time to pursue your passion.  Don’t feel guilty about it, and don’t second guess it.  Make room in your life to chase after your “thing.”  Admittedly, not an easy choice in the face of bills, laundry, and a full time job you need to keep your life afloat, but an important one.

I have used several block quotes from Stuff Christians Like.  Hopefully Jon Acuff, (who is the writer of these wonderful words) will be flattered and not peeved by this usage.

Have faith! The storm will pass

My power was out intermittently and my internet was out all night due to crazy thunderstorms.  The post I had planned requires more words than any sane person can type into their phone.  So this morning  you will have some lovely quotes to ponder as you make it through your Monday. Have faith in God; [...]

Finding something that’s been missing

I don’t care how poor a man is; if he has family, he’s rich. ~M*A*S*H “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”  ~Dr Seuss It’s a funny thing when you realize there has been something missing from your life.  Something that’s [...]

Home sweet home

I have returned from an epic journey that started off with some insane difficulties.  The story has become an entity of its own, that through re-telling has become something like trying to get to Mount Doom to destroy the one ring.  I was just trying to get to my cousin’s wedding and it seemed like [...]

We interrupt your regular blogging schedule

So I’m flying away for a few days.  My most awesome cousin is getting married and I’m going back up to semi-thawed out tundra.  I will see both sides of my family in a whirlwind of both drama and fun.  Hopefully I will return in full force with a ton of perspective and awesome ideas. [...]

Why you need a vacation

Vacation.  The ultimate in escapism. This isn’t a fantasy, this isn’t a daydream.  You are truly escaping your normal, everyday, routine life.  A break in what’s normal.  Sometimes, you just have to get the hell out of Dodge. You don’t toss a hot pocket in the microwave and park in front of the tv, you [...]

Do you want to learn something today?

I have to admit, I love Top Ten Lists and trivia. I don’t know what it is that makes me love them, I just do.  I guess I just like learning random bits of frequently useless info.  Maybe it’s the anticipation of waiting to see what number one will be, or maybe its just an [...]

Inspiration from Film: Fight Club Edition

In my random internet encounters I stumbled upon an old article that uses “Fight Club” quotations to highlight some tips on life.  The author “tones down” some of the better quotations and avoids others all together. On the surface, “Fight Club” acts as a testosterone driven summer action movie, and as such appeals to the [...]
