Gratitude: If you do Nothing Else…Do This

Next to my bed there is a journal.  I haven’t written in it for over a year.  I’m a slacker that way, but I intend to start again.  The journal is supposed to be what is called a “Gratitude Journal.”  If you Google this term, you will have more information than you can deal with.

The basic idea is this:  Choose a journal and every night before you go to sleep write down 5 things that you are grateful for today or things that made you happy.

You are not allowed to write negative things in this book.  Though occasionally when I’ve had a bad day I will write something like….

1. Air

2. No one stabbed me

3. I didn’t get eaten by Dingoes

4. Water

5. Was not abducted by aliens

The longer you keep at it, the easier it will be to put positive experiences in your list.  I find myself making the list in my head throughout the day and frequently had more than 5 things.  The great thing about this little, insignificant exorcise is that it helps you to focus on the good things in your life, and it creates a record of things that make you happy.

You can write a short list or paragraphs or pages.  It doesn’t really matter what the format is.  Just try it.  How could remembering things that make you happy be a negative thing?

I love to re-read the things Ive listed in the past to give myself some perspective on a bad day. Unfortunately, I got distracted from this plan a while back.  I was probably too drunk and too tired, too many nights in a row and I broke the habit.  But its a habit I will re-start now, and I encourage you try it too.

Why Today Might be a Good Day to Stay Home

Oh look.  Its April 1st and the internet has lost its damn mind again.  Tricks, hoaxes and practical jokes will rule the net today.  Don’t be surprised if today you visit upside down websites, if navigation seems a bit wonky, or you get more than your normal share of rick rolls.

The problem with this day is that you can never be sure anything you read is legitimate. Every news story needs an extra filter of questioning before you accept it.

Last year I was victim to a prank pulled by Think Geek that somewhat backfired on them.  The Star Wars Tauntaun sleeping bag hoax, (which I still want now that its a real product) received such an insane amount of interest that they had no choice but to work it out with LucasArts and create it.

This year I will be more skeptical of awesome things that may be too good to be true. Though I do look forward to seeing all the insanity the internet will bring.  What shenanigans does Google have planned?

Pull any good pranks this year or in years past?  See anything fun on the web today?  Leave a comment and let us know!

Choose to Change Your Life Today

“Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.”

Everyday is a choice.   Everything you do is a choice.  You can choose to have a good day.  You can choose to change, or not to.  If you are dissatisfied, you can choose differently.

Circumstances are usually beyond our control, but you decide what to make of them. You have the power to seek help if you need it. You can think positively or continue the cycle of negativity, its your choice.

I’m dissatisfied with my job and there are things about myself I want to change, but I can put in motion a plan to change these things.  I can’t quit my job tomorrow, because I need to pay rent and buy groceries, but I can choose to plan my escape.  I want to write.  And so I write.  I want to be happy and content with the things I have, so I will try to be.

Today you can choose to be happy, or you can choose to give in to other influences and be in a bad mood.

Its not usually wise to jump without looking or planning.  Exorcise responsibility and common sense.  But make a plan of action.  Follow through.

Choose action.  Choose a positive outlook.

It’s never too late to be what you might have been.

Today I will choose to (try to) fight off negative thoughts.  What choices will you make today?

The One Thing You Must Learn About Life

John Crichton: My grandmother used to say life is a great wheel. Sometimes it grinds you down into the mud, other times it lifts you up into the light. Ka DArgo: Are we strapped to this wheel? John Crichton: That’s a given. The point is, is that most times you get a second chance. You [...]
